Why do I need to know my caravan weights?
Reasons For Car & Caravan Weighing
Car and caravan weighing is an essential part of your travel preparations to ensure you are safe and legal on each and every journey.
Car and caravan weighing refers to the process of weighing the car, caravan and combination to ensure you have a balanced payload and are within the manufacturer’s specifications.
Knowing your weights is the first step to guide you on safe towing practices that enhance the stability of your setup. Here’s why it matters:
Safety Assurance
Carrying loads beyond the manufacturer’s specified weight limits can compromise the stability of your car and caravan. Weighing ensures you stay within safe operational parameters, reducing the risk of accidents, commonly caused by vehicle sway and instability.
Legal Compliance
Police and road authorities throughout Australia frequently set up mobile caravan weighing checkpoints to assess car and caravan compliance. Regular weighing helps you comply with legal requirements, avoiding potential fines or penalties.
Improved service Life
Overloading your car and caravan puts unnecessary stress on components, leading to premature wear and tear. Car and caravan weighing helps extend the lifespan of crucial elements such as brakes, tyres and suspension, ensuring a longer-lasting and cost-effective investment that remains insured.

Our caravan weighing service
What We Do
We are more than just a weighing service. Whether an experienced tower or first time traveller, you will benefit from the extensive and unbiased knowledge and experience that is shared by our team as part of your 1 – 1.5 hour assessment.
We identify unnecessary axle pressure, unbalanced load, suspension sag or weights that exceed the vehicle’s specified limits that can apply stress to rear suspension, impact steering/braking performance and increase the risk of vehicle sway.Travel height
We assess your complete towing setup including the travel height of the car and caravan to ensure they are both set up to achieve the most comfortable and stable ride.
Weight distribution
We use the latest in technology - calibrated, individual wheel scales with +/- 1kg accuracy so that we can review the complete load distribution for the car and caravan (side to side and front to rear) to ensure your cargo load is evenly and safely balanced.
On-the-spot rectification
We offer onsite solutions such as proposed load redistribution, secondary weighs and/or product enhancements designed to improve ride quality and dynamic stability, that can be purchased and fitted if required to get you towing at the optimal level.

Common questions we're asked about caravan weighing
FAQ's
Why can’t I tow a 3.5T caravan when I have 3.5T towing capacity on my car?
Towing capacity can be reduced when the vehicle is at its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) limit. Passengers, cargo, vehicle accessories and Tow Ball Mass (TBM) can quickly absorb the vehicle’s payload. Cars also have Tow Ball Mass (TBM) and axle load limits to consider when loading. Each setup is different, applying weight to various areas of the vehicle. Car and caravan weighing is the only way to identify how close you are to these limits.
What happens if I am not towing level?
Your towing height – the height of the tow hitch in comparison to the caravan coupling – is of vital importance. If your setup is not at the optimal level, you are at risk of increased vehicle sway. If the tow hitch is too low, the rear of the caravan may be high, possibly causing the caravan to fishtail with reduced rear axle connection to the road. If the tow hitch is too high, the front of the caravan may be too high, possibly causing the ‘tail to wag the dog’ – the caravan will sway the car, with reduced front axle connection to the road.
What is included in my car’s payload?
Importantly, the Tow Ball Mass (TBM) of the caravan is included in the vehicle GVM. Payload also includes fuel, cargo and vehicle accessories. Cargo can include passengers, car seats, luggage, fridges etc. Vehicle accessories can include tow bar, larger wheels, long range fuel tank, roof rack, bull bar, winch, lights, roof rack, snorkel, drawer systems, additional batteries etc.
What is included in my caravan’s payload?
Caravan payload includes anything that was installed post-manufacture, including additional accessories at the time of build/purchase, such as tool boxes, water tanks, batteries, solar panels, bike racks etc. It also includes gas, water in tanks and hot water service, bikes, food, drinks, luggage, crockery, BBQs, hoses, cables etc.
What does mobile caravan weighing cost?
Pricing starts at $180+gst for a vehicle weigh, and from $270+gst for a car and caravan weigh.
Appointments take approx. 1-1.5 hours, including time to discuss recommendations and results.
On the spot rectifications require extra time and may incur additional fees.
How do I prepare for an appointment?
We suggest having your car and caravan packed in a ‘trip ready’ state including full water tanks, gas bottles, food & drink, full tank of fuel in car and typical vehicle cargo etc to ensure you are replicating a fully loaded scenario (you can always remove weight on the day if required).
Where are appointments conducted?
The most accurate results are achieved by conducting the weigh on a level, sealed surface (concrete or bitumen). If you have a suitable area at your property, large enough to accommodate the car and caravan when connected, then we can come to you. Alternatively, we can meet at a public carpark that is convenient. i.e. a public car park at a recreation reserve or sporting complex.
Do you have any caravan weighing near me?
Yes, we service Melbourne and regional Victoria with Metro and Yarra Ranges locations serviced weekly. Regional trips are conducted weekly from Tues to Thurs in West Vic, North Vic, North-East Vic and East Vic. We provide upcoming dates on our social media platforms.
